The Pork Patio – An Illinois State Fair Tradition
SPRINGFIELD, ILL – For many, coming to the Pork Patio during the Illinois State Fair has been a tradition for over 30 years. This year, fairgoers can get their favorite pork products from August 10-20 during the fair.
There is a new item on the menu this year, the “Pork Twister.” It is a juicy, marinated pork kabob, weaved with bacon. It is sure to be a hit! The menu will also feature classics, including; Chop-on-a-Stick, DaBurger, loaded pork-tato, pork burgers, pork chops, and pulled pork BBQ. You can also add a side of bacon to any item.
Pork for the Pork Patio is donated by JBS and Smithfield. Each year Illinois pig farmers and industry representatives volunteer their time to serve shifts at the fair.
“The Pork Patio is a great avenue to reach a wide audience and promote pork. While serving food, Illinois pig farmers get to connect with the consumers first hand. The Pork Patio would not be possible without the contributions of time and effort from countless volunteers,” says Jenny Jackson, Director of Communications for IPPA.
The Pork Patio is located in the Illinois Commodities Pavilion across from the Grandstand ---corner of Grandstand Avenue and Avenue of Flags. It will be open daily during the fair on August 10-20 from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm and on preview night, Thursday August 10, from 5:00 -8:30 pm. We will be accepting debit and credit cards. Be sure to look for the free drink coupon in the official Illinois State Fair Maps located at the information booths.
There is a new bacon t-shirt available at the Pork Patio this year! Fairgoers are encouraged to join the Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) to help fight hunger throughout Illinois. With a $10 donation, fairgoers will receive an “I can dream, can’t I” t-shirt. It features a pig with the retail cuts marked out, but each cut says “bacon” instead. Pork Patio workers will be wearing the black shirts to help encourage donations.
Returning this year is a text-to-win game and snapchat filters! Text BACON to 30126 for a chance to win prizes such as free food and t-shirts from the Pork Patio. During all days of the fair there will be a snapchat filter available under the commodities pavilion.
The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) represents more than 2,000 pork producers throughout Illinois and the Illinois pork industry, which contributes more than $1.8 billion and more than 10,500 jobs to the state’s economy. IPPA is comprised of county pork producer groups in approximately 20 counties throughout Illinois. IPPA is an affiliate of the National Pork Producers Council and the National Pork Board.
